Johnny Madigan is orphaned, penniless, and just 16 years old.
He tells a Union Army recruiting sergeant he is 18 and old enough to fight.
But is he - or indeed any man - ready to be thrown into the horrors of the American Civil War?
On the bloody field of the Battle of Fredericksburg, as thousands of young men in both blue and grey are brutally cut down, the boy becomes a man.
And he is thrown into a man's battle.
Captured, he stumbles across a nest of plotters who could cost the Union the war. Can he foil their plot before eventually making his way back to the home he loves?
Flags of Our Sons is a meticulously researched adventure story that brilliantly recreates the drama, passion and terror of the Civil War.
It is perfect for fans of Bernard Cornwell and Charles Frazier.

Flags of Our Sons (Audible Audio Edition) John A Bray Daniel Rose Books Reviews
A first class Civil War drama by and author who served many years in NYPD, and whose experience of real, hard life shows through in this book. It's an action adventure story with a strong journey, in an authentically-researched world. This author knows his Civil War, and the reader can't tell whether or not Johnny will come marching home, or if he does march home, will he ever be the same again, after some truly horrific battles. Highly recommended.
This book was given to me for free in exchange for an honest review.
Flags of Our Sons is a well crafted novel focused on a young Irish teen's experiences during the American Civil War. The pacing of this book is well handled, with likable characters. I really thought it was interesting learning that some Irish joined the American Army in order to return home to fight the British. I wonder what impact this might have had for the IRA in the years that followed. The book is also light on action, but does pick up as you near the end of the story. Nevertheless, this does allow for the protagonist and supporting cast to be better developed. Some of the insights to the Union army was also interesting to read. I do wish, however, they could have been expanded upon in more detail given I enjoyed these moments the most while reading this book.
The main issues I had with this novel include I wish the author had spent more time on certain sequences (as I already mentioned), such as the Union boot camp, or the protagonist's incredible - blink and you'll miss it, POW status at one point of the book. These areas could have been greatly expanded up and even been self contained stories within themselves. Most aggravating was the author chooses to write as people speak, which is something I typically find extremely annoying to read. The words "Ye're, Yer, Tis, and Ye" are so overused that it makes much of the dialogue almost unreadable and unbearably bad. Even if people talked this way a hundred plus years ago, it doesn't make for good a reading, most of all how often it is used. This factor is the only reason why I chose not to give Flags of Our Father 4/5 - more my rating would be 3.5 if it was allowed. There are also a handful of grammar issues - namely the usage of the same word in one sentence, and a few misrepresented words here and there. Generally, these don't affect the story that much and are only minor annoyances that can easily be fixed.
Overall this is a solid Civil War book for those that enjoy reading these types of novels. All the issues I mentioned could easily be fixed with a week or two of rewrites.
This book was recommended to me by a friend. Great book. It made seeing the movie (Zero Dark Thirty) even better.
It is a great book and it really takes you into the Civil War time period. I highly recommend reading this book.
Felt it covered a factual progression (for the most part) of a typical group of Union Soldiers (recruited right off the boat). It
showed the reader a different approach to the Civil War and the advantages the North had due to Industrialization and
foreigh trade.
very elementary. I thought it would be different according to the preview. Not written at a very high reading level.
This seems like a close account of what the battles during the Civil War must have been like. It left the reader hanging at the finish though.
A very good historical fiction piece about the Civil War. Filled with well rounded characters and real events. Well worth reading.
